Parking consultation open for responses

by samalhamdani on 31 August, 2020

A new national consultation has been opened on pavement parking across the UK, just weeks after I wrote to the Home Office to ensure that it was not forgotten about during the summer recess.

The consultation puts forward three options:

  1. Improving the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process, under which local authorities can already prohibit pavement parking.
  2. A legislative change to allow local authorities with civil parking enforcement powers to enforce against ‘unnecessary obstruction of the pavement’.
  3. A legislative change to introduce a London-style pavement parking prohibition throughout England.

Given the narrow streets and lack of off-road parking in many parts of Oldham, including much of Grotton, Springhead and Lees, option three would be incredibly restrictive, and would cause far more problems than it solves.

For many residents with wheelchairs, or having young children in pushchairs and prams, it is an major ongoing issue, which results in them having to either use the road for access, or substantially detour.

Please respond to the consultation, at: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/managing-pavement-parking
